Appleseed

Our heroine, the elite soldier Deunan Knute, is forcefully being dragged in to utopian city Olympus. It is the perfect city where humans and bioroids can coexist peacefully. Or can they...? Turns out peace is threathened by human terrorists and it is up to Deunan and her former lover Briaros to regain Olympus' most vital possesion, the Appleseed, from the terrorists.
The film starts with Deunan fighting dark soldiers. They are clearly out to take her head. Then some bigger and better equipped soldiers come. First group of soldiers are being cut down like the lowly dogs that they are, and second group of soldiers take Deunan with them. All splendidly drawn and with energetic cameramovement. Plus the great soundtrack pumping in the back. The intro had me wondering if this was animè or "real" film.
Director Shinji Aramaki has done well with Masamune Shirovs manga. Of course, the ending is the usual stern warning that humans must take great care of this planet and all living things on it, in a mixture of science, sci-fi, philosophy and sentimental dribble.

Fun fact: the movement study for Deunan Knute is japanese actress Asumi Miwa. She starred as Kanna in the film
Ju-on. And what is Ju-on? The original "The grudge"!

This pic shows the cover of the comic-book that the film originates from. I promise You, she has none of that frumpy-housewife-look in the film.

Oh, and don`t laugh at right-hand-man Hades' boss. His name is Uranus.
